しかしわたくしは此方面の知識に乏しい。

何故と云ふに今流布してゐる慧琳音義は元文二年に既に刊行せられてゐて、此本以外に善本を坊間に獲むことは殆ど望むべからざる事であつた筈だからである。

裴氏慧琳が音義一百巻を著したのは、「以建中末年剏製」とも云つてあり、又「起貞元四年」とも云つてある。

要するに唐の徳宗の世であつた。

In short, it was in the world of Tokumune in Tang.

その成つたのは、「至元和二祀方就」、「迄元和五載」、「元和十二年二月二十日絶筆於西明寺焉」等記載区々になつてゐる。

要するに憲宗の世であつた。

 わたくしは慧琳音義が唐に成り後周に亡び、契丹より朝鮮に入り、朝鮮より日本に来たことを語つた。
